We add to growing research on how rightwing populism undermines democracy by identifying populist strategy works in parliamentary democracy. examine the fate of 2013 Estrela Report European Parliament, a legislative body which used be characterised high degree respect and deliberation. This became an unprecedented object ultra-conservative mobilisation, shocking MEPs unravelling consensus-driven status quo. trace downfall Report, show entailed (1) Destroying deliberative politics by, (2) Deploying what we call ‘antagonist politics’ meant polarize create impression that compromise was impossible, (3) Employing ‘thin proceduralism’, where procedural rules were expediently prevent discussions about Report. Antagonist polarized centrists, mobilized politicians otherwise disengaged with topic, while thin proceduralism convenient apparently rational solution end seemingly emotional unresolvable debate.
